Defending champion Burmeister leads Vikes

The Hayfield girls' track team finished third at the Triton Invitational Friday, just ahead of Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Southland, who was tied for fourth. The boys' teams were less successful, with GMLOS coming in seventh and Hayfield ninth.

Hayfield's Lauren Burmeister won the triple jump, was the runner-up in the 200- and third in the 100-meter dash. Burmeister is the defending state champion in the triple jump from Class A.

Sarah Halverson was second in the 1,600 meters as well. The Vikings also won the 100- and 200-meter relays.

GMLOS' Rebecca Stier was their top point-getter, capturing both the shot put and the discus events. Ashton May notched a win in the 200 meters and a second-place finish in the 400, while Maggie May was second in the 800. Their 4×200 and 4×800 relay teams garnered a pair of runner-up finishes.

For the boys, GMLOS' Ryan Ament placed second in the 100-meter dash. Brandon Evans was the runner-up in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Their 4×800 relay team took second as well.

Hayfield's best finish was fourth place in the long jump from Andrew Fitzgerald.

Both teams run at sub-sections Thursday at 4 p.m. in Dodge Center.
