The Southland baseball team wrapped up their regular season with yet another wrenching defeat Thursday, as visiting St. Charles came up with a 6-5 win in nine innings.
Southland held a 4-1 lead after six innings of play before St. Charles came storming back in the seventh with four runs of their own to seize a 5-4 advantage. With two runs in and two outs, a key Rebel error allowed the last two runs to score.
The Rebels didn't give up though, as Steve Snyder came up with a clutch home run in the bottom of the inning to send the game into extras.
After Southland starter Greg Retterath left to begin the ninth, St. Charles scored the winning run off of his replacement Zach Stratton. Matt Cohn got the final two outs in the bottom of the inning to nail down the victory for starter Chris Ask.
Snyder had a mammoth day at the plate for the Rebels, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and 3 RBIs in addition to his game-tying home run. Retterath and Stratton both had two singles on the day as well.
Southland concludes the season at 5-13 and 5-12 in Three Rivers Conference play.
Blossoms rally on USC
The Blooming Prairie baseball team capped their rally from a 6-1 deficit with a walkoff home run from David Kramer to stun visiting United South Central Thursday.
Kraig Olson went the distance for the win, striking out nine and allowing only four hits. Only three runs were earned.
Trailing 6-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, the Blossoms came up with five runs to tie it up. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Kramer, who had a two-run double.
He managed to top that hit with his blast in the bottom of the seventh to give BP the dramatic victory.
Kramer was 2-for-3 on the day with three runs scored, three RBIs and his two extra-base hits.
BP finishes the regular season at 14-5 and 9-4 in Gopher Conference play. They find out their seeding for the sub-sections this Saturday.
Hayfield keeps it interesting
Despite only having three hits Thursday, the Hayfield baseball team still made it interesting before bowing out to their visitors from Triton by the score of 10-7.
It was a rollercoaster complete game for Triton's Tyler Paulson, who struck out 11 and allowed just those three hits, but walked a whopping seven Viking batters as well. His defense didn't help either, committing six errors behind him.
George Evjen went five innings to take the loss for Hayfield.
Scott Thompson was their most productive hitter on the day, going 1-for-2 with a couple of walks and a run scored.
Now 5-11 and 7-12 overall, Hayfield faces New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva at home tomorrow in what will be a preview of the first round of sections next Thursday, when the No. seeded Vikings will travel to top seed NRHEG.
