After being plagued with poor run support all season, Austin senior pitcher Kyle Rizzi took matters into his own hands Thursday, firing a one-hit shutout to carry the 10th-seeded Packers to the upset of No. 7 Waseca in Section 1AAA first round action.

"Not much you can say about this game, it was just a classic pitcher's duel," said AHS head coach Troy Watkins. "Both pitchers were in command the whole way."

Rizzi recorded eight strikeouts and only one walk over his seven innings of work.

His counterpart John Kaminski was just as impressive, allowing three hits and fanning 16 Packers in a complete game effort.

The Waseca hurler did get himself into trouble in the first inning, putting runners on second and third with no one out off of an error, a walk, and a balk. But he got himself right out of danger by striking out the side.

The Packers were able to eke out their only run in the next inning. Adam Edge doubled with one out, and John Bastyr followed with a single to right. Edge was then able to score off a Kaminski wild pitch to complete the scoring.

"The field was pretty wet," Watkins said, "so the ball wasn't going anywhere out there."

Austin advances to meet the winner of No. 2 Eagan and No. 15 Faribault Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Eagan.
