Voters reject liquor ordinance change

LYLE -- A proposal to allow liquor to be sold in Lyle every Sunday failed Tuesday in a special election.
Because of a city ordinance, liquor only is allowed to be sold on 15 Sundays during the year in Lyle. The Out of Bounds Bar and Grill can be open on 12 of the Sundays and the American Legion can be open on the other three.
Sixty of 313 registered voters turned out Tuesday, with 26 voting yes and 34 voting no, City Clerk Diana DeBoer said.
Out of Bounds Bar owners asked that the city liquor license be changed so that the bar and grill could be open everyday of the week. The first vote on the change was held Nov. 5 and failed 127-150.
Manager Mike Ohm petitioned for another vote earlier this year. To do so, the bar had to collect signatures from those who voted in the November election. The city needed to wait six months after the first election to be able to hold another one.
Ohm, who also runs an Out of Bounds bar in Elgin, is disappointed with the results.
"It's kind of disheartening because we put a lot of effort down there," Ohm said.
The bar is open 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday and serves lunch and dinner. Ohm said there are not many other places to go in Lyle to eat out on Sunday.
"It gives us an opportunity," Ohm said.
He also said some of his customers live outside city limits.
"They don't get to vote," Ohm said.
Ohm and owner Dale Helget have not decided whether to petition for another election. The earliest another election could be held is November.
