Legion wallops Waseca, 13-9

The Austin Legion Post 91 bats came alive Thursday night, and just in time too as it needed all that offense in order to overcome host Waseca 13-9.

"It was kind of sloppy, but it's always nice to get a win on the road," said Post 91 coach Bob Stratton, "especially against a team that usually doesn't give up that many runs."

Despite committing five errors, Austin overcame those miscues by rapping out 16 hits -- five of which went for extra bases. They also scored multiple times in four of their seven at-bats, including four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Austin starter Andy Swank (2-1) wasn't at his sharpest, but he still hung on for the complete game win.

"He really gutted it out tonight," Stratton said of Swank, who gave up five earned runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out one.

Post 91 came out swinging in the first -- getting three runs off Waseca starter Dustin LaRue -- and never looked back.

"We were able to get onto him right away," Stratton said, "but we hit all of their pitchers well really."

As he did against a week ago against Faribault, Swank helped himself to a win with the bat once again by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Kyle Rizzi had a monster night as well, putting up 4-for-5 performance that included a double, a triple, and four RBIs.

Joe Kroc reached base five consecutive times by doubling and drawing four walks. Adam Edge went 3-for-5 and Nels Nelson 2-for-5, with each driving in a couple of runs.

With the win, Austin improves to 5-7 and 2-2 in First District play. Post 91 will be back at Marcusen Park Saturday for a doubleheader with Winona. Play begins at 6 p.m.
