Meyer delivers in rated battle for Greyhounds

Austin Greyhounds pitcher Scott Meyer picked up his seventh victory of the year Tuesday as he and his fourth-ranked mates knocked off their hosts, the fifth-rated Chaska Cubs, 3-2, in a sloppy game for both sides.

"They basically gave us two runs," said 'Hounds manager John Frein, "but we gave them a run too."

Meyer went the distance to get the win, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out three.

"He threw really well tonight, a typical Scott Meyer performance," Frein said. "He kept them off-balance and got lots of groundouts."

Meyer did hit a couple of Cub batters, which would come back to haunt him.

In the first, Chaska got runners to second and third with no one out after Meyer drilled the leadoff hitter and gave up a single and a stolen base. He held the Cubs to an RBI-sacrifice fly to end the inning down only 1-0.

Chaska got to Meyer again in the second, as Benji Borner singled and Jesse Worm was hit by a pitch. An Austin error allowed Borner to score to make it 2-0.

The 'Hounds would tie it up in the fifth off Chaska starter Justin Allen. Austin led off the inning with a Matt Cano double and a walk to Tim Kaplan, with both runners advancing into scoring position on a wild pitch.

Allen came back to strike out Mitch Mullenbach, but the payoff pitch bounced off the catcher and up the third-base line, allowing Cano to score and putting Mullenbach at first. Jamie Morrison then hit an RBI-fielder's choice grounder to square things at 2-all.

Austin took the lead in the fifth with an assist from the Cubs' defense. Tate Cummins hit a one-out double and went to third on a wild pitch. Cano then grounded to short for what looked to be the final out of the inning, but an error allowed Cummins to score the go-ahead run.

Meyer settled down after the second to hold Chaska (13-7) to three hits and no runs over the final seven innings.

Offensively, Cummins was 3-for-4 with the double, a walk, and a run scored for Austin. Kaplan walked twice and scored a run, while Nick Rohne was 1-for-3 with a sacrifice.

"We'll see them again," Frein said of Chaska, "but it'll be tougher next time for both of us, with more on the line."

Austin (15-6, 4-1) will complete their Southern Minny League season series with Owatonna tonight at Marcusen Park at 7:30 p.m. The 'Hounds routed the Aces 10-1 Sunday in Owatonna.
