The Austin Greyhounds (2-10 overall) had a late opportunity come up short in an 11-4 loss to the Rochester Royals in 12 innings Saturday at Riverland.
The Greyhounds had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the 11th, but after a strikeout, Nick Rohne hit a line drive right at the Royal’s shortstop, who turned it into a double play.
“Rohne hit it as hard as anyone hit the ball all day,” Greyounds manager John Frein said. “If it’s a couple of feet either way, the game’s over right there.”
But the Royals were energized by the play as they went on to score eight runs in the top of the 11th to take the game over. Matt Raso took the loss has he went over 11 innings on the mound for Austin.
“Matt threw a lot of pitches, but it wasn’t stamina. They just got to him a couple of times and we missed a couple of plays,” Frein said. “Rasso threw good enough to win, but we just didn’t give him enough run support.”
The Hounds scored their only runs in regulation when Rohne, Frein and Craig Braaten each came up with run-scoring singles in the seventh to tie the game at 3.
