A 29-year-old woman has been charged with multiple counts of theft for allegedly stealing items from several of her disabled clients, one of whom reportedly recorded her removing things and trying on clothes.
Tanisha Lynette Smith, of Austin, has been charged with one count of gross misdemeanor theft and two counts of misdemeanor theft by swindle for removing $773 worth of personal items from several homes while working as a caregiver for local disabled residents.
According to the criminal complaint, the father of one of the alleged victims, a 22-year-old woman living at Prairie Sky Apartments, spoke to police June 17 about Smith, who had just started working with his daughter.
The complaint said the defendant came twice a week for several hours, and at least one time before that date, his daughter had heard her rummaging through her bedroom.
He told police that she’d already noticed multiple items missing, including jewelry, computer equipment, perfume and a digital recorder, all worth a total of $300, the complaint states.
Police learned that the man had set up a video camera in hopes of catching Smith in the act. Surveillance allegedly shows her stealing things and trying on clothing while her client is showering.
The complaint said the video recorded Smith trying on pants and “sizing up” undergarments; among additional items missing were multiple shirts, pants, bras and shorts. The complaint also listed two more bottles of perfume, CDs and a Web camera.
Total value of all alleged items is $638.
The complaint said police arrested the defendant outside Prairie Sky Apartments June 24. Smith allegedly admitted to taking several items from the one client, as well as two others; she also said she tried on the woman’s pants and looked at undergarments, the complaint said, though denied stealing clothing.
The complaint states that she told police she took a computer mouse, CD and DVDs from a second client. When asked if she’d be willing to return what she’d stolen, she agreed to collect items from her apartment, the complaint said.
Smith had a court date scheduled for July 10. Her bail was set at $3,000 unconditional or free release with conditions.
