Letter: Signs of the times

The Austin City Council is wise to prohibit all signs, except those designated for traffic and city use, from public right-of-ways. Not only are garage sale signs and other signs a safety issue, with people gawking and trying to write things down while driving, they are public eyesores. They also get blown off, wet and bent out of shape and are not removed. By having two designated places for garage sale signs, it creates the fairest situation for all involved, too. All you have to do is cruise to one of the two locations and write them all down at once. If fell that announcements should be given over the radio and TV and put in the newspapers at least twice a year as to the city policy and if there are those who don’t obey, fine them the first time. If there are no signs, why should people think they can put one there? And, if you see someone placing signs where they don’t belong, give them a hint, even if people don’t like it. Just tell them you’re saving them from getting fined!
