Local authorities are still looking for the owner of a vehicle that hit a fire hydrant and car around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Austin Police Chief Paul Philipp, who said the culpable red Ford Explorer has been impounded.

Philipp said police were initially called to the intersection of 12th Street Southeast and Fourth Avenue on reports of a hit-and-run involving the Explorer.

A fire hydrant had been dismantled in the collision, having flown 10 feet and crashing into a fence at 409 12th St. S.E.. The chief said authorities were assessing the scene when they learned of a second accident linked to the sport utility vehicle on 12th Street Northeast. Philipp said the report didn’t list any features of the second vehicle, except the license plate.

Officers tracked the SUV to 712 15th St. N.E. using a trail of fresh fluid from 12th Street. The Explorer identified had front-end damage and paint transfer consistent with the alleged accidents, Philipp stated.

After attempts to contact the vehicle owner failed, police located a 24-year-old male subject in possession of beer walking nearby. The brand of beer matched those found in the SUV, though further investigation found the man had recently left his sister’s house and had not driven a vehicle.

The Explorer was then towed from the area and remains in police custody.
