A Blooming Prairie man may face assault charges after he allegedly stabbed a second man in the cheek with a beer bottle Monday, according to Austin Police Chief Paul Philipp, who said both men were treated at Austin Medical Center before the subject was arrested.

The chief said authorities found the 28-year-old Blooming Prairie resident at Ankeny’s gas station, 1400 14th St. N.W., around 12:14 a.m. following a report of a stabbing victim. The 28-year-old man, who was covered in blood, according to the report, told police that he had been stabbed during an altercation with another man.

Philipp said the report described the man has “incoherent” during the interview, and said the victim couldn’t provide much more information before his transport to AMC.

Witnesses at a nearby house, 1414 Sixth Ave. N.W., said the suspect had struck another person with a beer bottle, the chief said. Police responded to AMC and spoke with the girlfriend of the alleged victim, who received stitches for a cut on his left cheek.

She said the two had been fighting when her boyfriend, of Austin, was struck in the face with the bottle. She immediately took him to AMC, according to Philipp.

Witnesses corroborated her story, saying that the alleged culprit started the fight because no one was “paying attention to him,” the chief said.

The man received stitches to his hand before he was arrested, Philipp stated. The victim would not give further statements, the chief said.

No charges have been filed to date.
