The No. 3 seeded LeRoy/Ostrander volleyball team had to hang on to beat No. 11 Houston by scores of 24-26, 26-24, 25-20, 25-23 in the second round of the Subsection West Section 1A playoffs in Mabel Thursday.
The Cardinals (20-7-1 overall) shook off some early nerves to beat the Hurricanes (6-16 overall)
“We played very tight and a hard time loosening up and having fun,” L/O head coach Lisa Swenson said. “We never stopped fighting and we pulled it off. Houston is a very scrappy team and they gave their all.”
Junior setter Mac Bunne got her 1,000th career set assist for the Cardinals as she had 31 assists on the night with five aces.
Toni Blood had 10 kills and five aces for L/O, Kaylee Bunne had 10 kills and four blocks, and Mary Scaglione had 15 digs.
Meredith Lee had 13 kills and 23 digs for Houston, Jen Ulmen had 11 kills, Emily Hegland had 20 assists, Jessica Meeks had 31 digs, and Astri Runningen had nine kills.
The Cardinals will take on No. 2 Mabel/Canton Saturday in Rochester Civic Center at 4:30 p.m.
M/C (32-2-1 overall) won the SEC and swept L/O three times this season.
