Maybe you can go home again.
Financial literacy writer and educator Michael J. Wagner, who graduated from Austin High School in 1977, will offer a free seminar for young adults and their parents at the Austin Public Library Monday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.
The event, which comes fresh off Wagner writing his book, “Your Money Day One: How to Start Right and End Rich,” kicks off a four-state, 23 engagement tour that ends in Chicago Oct. 30.
“It’s always been my mission and my vision that when my book was finished, that I would first speak in Austin,” he said.
Wagner now lives in Los Angeles, has 17 years of finance experience working with banks and as a stock broker and has been a public speaker for more than two decades.
He also teaches life skills to inner-city high school students, including how to write a resume and how to find a job. He expresses the importance of teaching good money management skills to our youth and young adults.
“There’s always a decision being made that affects your personal finances,” he said.
“Do I buy this or that? Do I eat out, do I not eat out? It’s constant.”
With that said, Wagner is also optimistic when it comes to the next generation.
“I think it’s just the fact that the young generation is the most technologically advanced that has ever lived, and I think they will learn from the mistakes that have been made before them.”
Wagner’s speaking tour is both a way to get the word out on his book that still needs a publisher, as well as to get his point across.
“With the current economic crisis dominating news headlines, there couldn’t be a more appropriate time to reach out to young adults and impart some common sense lessons about managing their finances, lessons that are seldom taught in traditional school curriculum,” Wagner said.
His seminar topic Monday is “Will You Control Your Money or Will Your Money Control You?”
