Letter: Printing section a lack of judgment

Published 10:34 am Wednesday, October 22, 2008

The past two Friday editions of the Austin Daily Herald have included a boxed section on the “Faith and Family” section refuting (condemning?) certain beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church.  I can’t believe the Herald would allow such repudiations to appear on that page — especially since a number of the advertisers are themselves Catholic.  If these statements belong anywhere in the newspaper, they should be vented on the opinion page where they belong.  Even there the source of such attacks needs to be credited to something other than a Web site.  ( Any kook can put anything he wants on a Web site. ) I do know enough about journalistic ethics to recognize this as a huge overstepping on the part of the Herald editorial staff.  I am surprised Wallace Alcorn hasn’t taken serious issue with this lapse in judgment in his weekly Herald column.
