NORTHFIELD — The Class A state cross country meet was a culmination of a career for Pacelli runner Colin Sheehan.
Sheehan, a senior, made his first trip to the state meet after running four years of running cross country and finished 106th out of 157 runners Saturday at St. Olaf College in Northfield. Sheehan had a time of 17 minutes, 55.8 seconds and felt good through the first two miles of his race.
“My first and second miles were on time, but the third one kind of dragged,” Sheehan said.
Sheehan admitted that his first trip to the state meet was a bit nerve wracking, but he focused on accomplishing his personal goals.
“I knew I was just going to run my own race no matter what,” he said. “It’s a tough race.”
Sheehan said he didn’t finish as well as he would have liked to, but he was proud of the race he ran in his final high school race.
“I lost to a couple of guys I had my eye on at the beginning of the race,” he said. “But I finished strong and left everything out there.”
Making the trip to state was accomplishment enough for Sheehan. He finished ninth at the section meet and was pleased to be at state.
“There are points where you don’t think it’s really possible, and you keep running and hard work pays off,” he said.
Clayton Foster from Pequot Lakes won the Class A title with a time of 16:14.5, and Blake took home the team title with 121 points.
