Gift-wrapping to benefit kids

The images of Christmas Day usually revolve around a beautifully adorned tree sheltering pristinely wrapped presents, each one proudly displaying a gift tag nestled under an ornate bow. Unfortunately, not everyone’s gifts look like they were pulled from a Norman Rockwell painting.
Whether the hustle and bustle of the season hasn’t left you time, or you are just not a master of Yuletide origami, some presents simply aren’t wrapped to perfection.
This holiday season, volunteers from the Cedars of Austin will be wrapping the communities presents for a good cause at Oak Park Mall.
On Dec. 8, 10 and 11, the volunteers will be setting up a free-will donation gift wrapping station in the mall to benefit Toys for Tots.
The program is in its third year at Oak Park Mall. Each year the money collected is donated to a good cause. In 2006 the money was given to the Mower County Senior Center. In 2007, and again this year, Toys for Tots is the beneficiary.
“We wanted to do something special for the holiday season, for a good cause,” said Lori Wacek, marketing director for the Cedars of Austin and event organizer.
Presents, bought at the mall or taken from home, can be brought to the station to be wrapped by the team of experienced volunteers. There is no limit to the number of packages you can bring.
In the past the station has kept busy during its hours of operation. Wacek estimates they averaged 75 to 100 gifts wrapped per hour at each shift. All donations will be used by the volunteers to purchase toys for Toys for Tots.
In 2007 the station raised $275, and Wacek hopes they can do just as well this year. “I am a little concerned, with the issues with the economy spending may be down,” she said.
The wrapping materials were donated by the Cedars of Austin. The work area was provided by the Oak Park Mall.
The station will be open from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday and 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
New toys for Toys for Tots can be brought to the Cedars of Austin or the gift wrapping station. For more information about the station, call the Cedars of Austin at 437-3246.
