The Austin girls hockey team escaped with a 2-2 tie with Winona in Riverside Arena Tuesday.

The Packers (6-8-3 overall, 3-6-1 Big Nine) survived a penalty shot by Winona in overtime when goalie Audrey DeVries made a huge save. DeVries finished with 45 saves.

“Audrey kept us in the game and we had a our chances to win it in the end with a couple of late shot attempts,” Austin head coach Denny Bray said.

The Packers trailed 2-1 going into the third period, but Abby Gallaher scored on an assist from Kirsten Stanek early in the frame. Stanek scored in the first period on an assist from Ashley Arhart and has five goals in Austin’s past three games.

“Stanek’s been on fire lately,” Bray said.

Austin attempted just 21 shots on the night as it got off to a slow start.

“We started sluggish but we put on a flurry in the third period,” Bray said. “We were skating harder and getting to the puck. But we’ve got to play for more than one period.”

Winona scored two power play goals in the second period.
