ALDEN – One of the secrets to the Blossoms success this year is found in the simple statement — just score more.
In the Blossom’s final regular season game scoring more is what they did for the 19th time this season and the not so much best kept secret again was found in their senior shooter Matt Zellmer.
Zellmer drained seven three-point shots his 26 points along with his team mates’ 33 points gave the Blossoms (19-5 overall) the edge they needed to win big against Alden/Conger (9-16 overall) 59- 43.
BP controlled the pace and the points spread the whole game as they started off with a 13-0 lead in the first minutes of the game.
Fortunately for Alden/Conger, junior guard Travis Marth was able to break free and stick in the Knight’s first points of the night as he sank a three to start off and then threw in a nice eight foot jumper just off the base line to bring the score to within 10.
The Awesome Blossoms stayed on track with their scoring; ending the first half with a comfortable 13 point lead at 32-19.
Zellmer and senior forward Josh Toquam had a combined five three-point shots in the first half along with senior center, Josh Johnson who gave the Blossoms six solid points from underneath.
The Blossoms are a bit banged up but the six day break before playing again should help. Sophomore Cooper Nelson has a sore knee, senior Austin Moe is still hampered by a high ankle sprain from a football injury and the jury is still out on sharp shooter Israel Clark’s knee that he re-injured in Saturday’s game against Faribault’s Bethlehem Academy.
Coach Bruns from BP was pleased with the effort he saw from his team as they finished the regular season winning six of their last eight games and giving great effort in the losses.
The Blossoms will open the playoffs at home against the Hayfield Vikings (5-20 overall).
BP beat the Vikings 80-65 back at the midway point of the season.
BP scoring; Matt Zellmer 26, Josh Toquam 14, Josh Johnson 11, Cooper Nelson 2, Austin Moe 2, Aaron Krejci 2, Justen Ingvalson 2
