Perhaps no one is better equipped to bring to life the music of George and Ira Gershwin.

Here’s the story Austin Artist Series members will see unfold March 16: The year is 1931, the place is Time Square in the heart of New York’s theater district.

The mob owns Broadway. They have already chosen their star, so the auditions for the big Gershwin production are a sham … until in walks Melody Starr, played by Martin, who wows everyone as violinist, soprano, pianist, dancer, actress and more.

Martin stars in a high-voltage ride through the Gershwin brothers music, including Rhapsody in Blue, I Got Rhythm, The Man I Love, Someone to Watch Over Me and American In Paris.

The Gershwin music is endless: Porgy and Bess, Embraceable You and more.

Martin is a graduate of the Julliard School of Music and Indiana University.

She has studied with Dorothy DeLay, Yura Yaron, Mimi Zweig, Masao Kawasawki and Glenn Dicterow. She has appeared with the Milwaukee Symphony, Pilsen Philharmonic in the Czech Republic and other prestigious orchestras.

She will be accompanied by a jazz trio, including piano, drums and bass.
