An Austin man faces charges of criminal vehicular operation after allegedly injuring a friend while drunken driving.

Raymond Wentzel, 22, was arrested April 3 and charged with four counts of criminal vehicular operation (two felonies and two gross misdemeanors). Bail was set at $25,000 or $2,500 with conditions.

According to police records, three Austin police officers were dispatched to the 300 block of 10th Street Northeast at 8:38 p.m. April 3. They arrived on the scene to find several severely damaged vehicles on the east side of 10th Street and several people in the parking lot of Jones Cabinets.

One man, who held a sweatshirt to his bleeding face, said his friend, the defendant, was “driving way too fast.”

The defendant claimed he had consumed five liquor shots and five beers before driving. His leg was bleeding.

Wentzel failed all field sobriety tests and a breath test showed an alcohol concentration of 0.153.

The defendant was arrested and transported to Austin Medical Center.

An officer then reported a vehicle had been struck in the Plaza Lot downtown. When questioned, the defendant said he could not remember if he was responsible for hitting the vehicle; his friend claimed he was.

The friend told police he lost consciousness after the collision and had lower back pain. He said he had been shouting at the defendant to slow down.

Wentzel is scheduled for arraignment in Mower County District Court April 23.
