An attempted fraud using forged signatures from Hanson Tire in LeRoy was averted Thursday morning at First State Bank.

According to the Mower County Sheriff’s Department, a cashier received a fax around 11 a.m. Thursday requesting that funds amounting to $24,318 be taken from a Hanson Tire account and wired to Sofia, Bulgaria. The wire included a signature of a responsible at Hanson Tire that appeared authentic, though there was no origin number on the fax.

Hanson Tire was contacted and confirmed it not authorize such a transaction.

The case is still under investigation.
