Century takes two from Packers

The Austin baseball team finished with a bang but still came up on the short end of the scoreboard in both games of a doubleheader against Rochester Century in Seltz Field Thursday.

After falling 12-3 to the Panthers (7-7 overall) in the opener, the Packers came up a little short in a 5-4 loss in the nightcap.

Austin (4-13 overall, 2-13 Big Nine) got some clutch hitting in the sixth inning of the second game to pull within 5-4. Brady Klingfus lifted a two-out, two-run triple over Century’s left fielder’s head and Dylan Monson knocked a run scoring base hit up the middle to make it 5-4. But Mike Hoeper grounded out to end the rally with Monson on first.

Steven Rizzi reached on a Century fielding error with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Joel Swatfager struck out and Mark Harber grounded out to end the game.

Century came out strong, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after two.

“We started too late and it’s a couple of plays here or there that make the difference between a win and a loss,” Austin head coach Troy Watkins said. “We need to tighten things up and not give up so many extra bases.”

On the mound, Adam Hemann overcame a rough start as he allowed just four hits after the first two innings.

“Adam hasn’t pitched for awhile and we’ve been working with him a little bit on the side because he was struggling with control,” Watkins said. “It was nice to see him come back.”

While committing two errors, the Packers also had some defensive gems. Dylan Monson threw out Century’s Jared Samuelson at the plate from left field to end the fourth inning and Austin turned two double plays.

“We’ve been turning a lot of double plays this year,” Watkins said. “It’s just the bloopers and the plays we’re not making that have hurt us.”
