Greyhounds open season with a win

It was wet, it was windy and it was cold.

But none of that mattered as the Austin Greyhounds opened up the amateur baseball season with a 6-4 win over the La Crosse A’s at Marcusen Park Friday.

“It wasn’t that big a deal,” Hounds manager John Frein said of the weather. “We’re just so happy to play that it was like a sunny night for us.”

Austin (1-0 overall) went with a pitcher by committee approach as four different hurlers took the mound. John Kirby notched the win while striking out three in two innings, and Dave Meyer pitched the last two frames to get the save.

“It’s good for the pitchers to get work and that will be our objective the next few games,” Frein said. “We feel towards the end of the year guys won’t be burnt out. We’ve had trouble with that in the past.”

Offensively, the Hounds had just six hits, but their two biggest knocks came from Tyler Leopold, a first-year Greyhound from Heron Lake, Minn. Leopold fought from behind the count to bloop a one-run single into right field to put Austin up 2-1 in the first and he blasted a run-scoring double in the seventh to give the Hounds an insurance run.

“(They’re pitcher) throws pretty hard. I was gunning for a fastball,” Leopold said of his double. “I got one and I took it to right.”

Frein was impressed with the newcomers’ hitting.

“He just really showed up and hit the ball,” he said. “A couple times he fell behind, but he battled back. He’s a good batter.”

Leopold played amateur ball at Haren Lake for eight years before moving to Austin four months ago. He is now getting to know a brand new group of teammates.

“They’re a good group and it’s a lot of people to get to know. They gave me a shot right away to show them what I can do,” he said.

The Hounds flashed some good defense on the night as Nick Rohne made two diving catches in center field and Frein glove scooped a ground ball to Nick Bowe at second to turn a key double play in the fifth.

“We made some nice plays,” Frein said. “Those are actually pretty big, if we don’t make them the outcome of the game is probably different.”

The Hounds will host ‘Rollin’ with the Hounds’ at Echo Lanes Saturday at noon. The event is open to the public and all members of the Greyhounds will be present.

“It’s a lot of fun and we’re hoping a lot of people come,” Frein said.
