The Heroes for the American Red Cross campaign officially begins today with businesses fundraising for the organization throughout May. The goal for this year’s campaign is $10,000.
Heroes for the American Red Cross is a grassroots campaign in which financial institutions, school groups, faith-based groups, civic clubs, local business people and individuals pledge to raise $1,000 through any legal means they choose for the local Red Cross.
Elaine Hansen, executive director of the Mower County Chapter of the American Red Cross, said this is the third year of the countywide campaign, which also works to get information out to the public.
“We also hope that people would pick up some information about being prepared, especially in light of the swine flu,” Hansen said.
Several businesses in Austin are selling various items to raise money, including wooden flowers, popcorn, candy and candles. The Austin Culver’s will participate in the nationwide “Day of Caring” May 12, when 10 percent of its proceeds will benefit the local Red Cross.
“They are all doing different types of events for fundraisers,” Hansen said.
The “Heroes” campaign is also a local competition to raise the most money. First Farmers & Merchants Bank won the first year, and Accentra Credit Union won the second year. The winners’ names are engraved on a traveling trophy.
