Contractor cited after not finishing work

A man was cited for not having proper contracting paperwork Tuesday, but Austin Police Chief Paul Philipp said he’s heard fewer reports lately of potential scammers taking advantage of tornado damage.
Martin Chapman, 47, of Brook Park, Minn., did some tree work at Peter Lang’s home on the 1800 block of Second Street Northeast before getting $150 for a lunch break and not returning to finish the work. Lang notified police, who cited Chapman for not having City Hall approval to do contract work. Philipp said police had previously warned Chapman he needed that paperwork but did not cite him then.
Philipp said Austin residents should check for proper paperwork before letting anyone do work on, in or around their homes. The chief said his department heard a number of reports of potential scam contracting right after last Wednesday’s storm, but said he’s noticed fewer this week.
