Hormel Foods announced Friday a deal with a Mexican food company to create a new joint venture for marketing Mexican food brands across the country.

Hormel and Mexico City-based Herdez Del Fuerte are expanding an existing partnership to create MegaMex Foods. MegaMex will market and manage various food brands, including Hormel’s popular Chi-Chi’s line and Herdez Del Fuerte’s authentic Mexican foods. The joint venture will be located in Chino, Calif.

The company’s organization is expected to be completed by the end of October.

“This expanded, long-term agreement with Herdez Del Fuerte is an example of how we continue to look to diversify our product portfolio,” Jeffrey Ettinger, Hormel president and chief executive officer, said in a press release.

The incoming managing director of MegaMex, Luis Marconi, said the new startup is not likely to have much affect on the day-to-day operation of Hormel’s Austin plant.

He also said it’s too early to tell if MegaMex could provide new job opportunities for Hormel workers in Austin.

Marconi added that MegaMex should strive in the Mexican foods market because they can provide both popular Hormel brands and a wide array of Herdez Del Fuerte brands from Mexico.

Herdez Del Fuerte operates seven manufacturing facilities and nine distribution centers across Mexico with more than 6,000 employees.

Juan Marco Gutiérrez Wanless, chairman at Herdez Del Fuerte, said in the release that the deal combines his company’s “premier Mexican food products and brands” with Hormel’s expertise in manufacturing and distribution.

“This is an important step toward delivering on our ongoing growth and profitability strategy and making us stronger for the future,” he said.
