It’s malts, dodge ball and dancing at Dairy Days

Summer isn’t officially here yet, but that won’t stop the festivities in Adams this weekend.

The town’s annual Dairy Days kicks off Friday with its city-wide rummage sales and a dodge ball tournament that begins at 3:30 p.m.

Saturday’s events feature a poker fun walk and bike ride from 7 to 9 a.m. and a Civil War re-enactment, beginning with camp opening at 9 a.m.

“I hope everyone comes out and enjoys themselves,” said Sarah Douty, member of the Adams Booster Club. “It will be a good time, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that the weather holds out.”

Forecasts as of Thursday predict partly cloudy weather Friday, and perhaps a scattered thunderstorm or two somewhere around Saturday. Sunday looks sunny.

Two of the more popular events for Dairy Days include the street dance Saturday night from 8:30 p.m. to midnight on Commerce Street and the parade Sunday at 1 p.m. that lines up north of Southland High School.

This year’s music for the dance will be performed by Rocket Dawgs.

Cost is $6, with doors opening at 8 p.m.

Rain relocates the dance to the Adams Legion.

“They have such a variety of things,” said “Bubbles” Heller, owner of Bubbles Cafe, about Dairy Days. “It’s just a nice family event.”

New this year is the “where is it contest?” where people can pick up enlarged photos of places around town and try to guess where each Adams landmark is located. Entry forms are available now at Heimer Foods and can be dropped off at the Sunday night ice cream eating contest that starts at 6:30 p.m. in front of the elevator.

Also new for 2009 is a “guess the weight contest,” Sunday night, where people can guess the weight of a cow and the dairy princesses combined for $1. The contest will be held at around 8 p.m. in front of the elevator.

Concessions for Dairy Days includes a beer garden, steak burgers and the Mower County American Dairy Association’s malt stand.
