Member’s of Austin’s YMCA have probably heard it in the hallways.

Clap-clap-clap, clap clap!

The catchy sounds aren’t from wild animals, but from youth and staff taking part in Summer Daze, the YMCA’s day camp that offers parents a place to bring their kids during the summer months.

The 19th year of the program kicked off June 4 and runs through the beginning of September from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. each weekday.

Over the course of each week, participants take part in everything from dodge ball to gymnastics to swimming lessons to field trips.

And when the Twins host the New York Yankees July 9, they will be there.

“It’s a lot of fun, keeps them active,” said Karen Longueville, supervising counselor for Summer Daze. “I mean they’re movin’ and grovin’ all day, so they aren’t sitting at home watching TV or playing video games. I’d say the biggest thing is it keeps them active, and it’s a safe environment.”

On Monday, it was business as usual for Summer Daze, which has about 150 kids registered.

Halie Retterath, Araina Shropshire and Lathan Wilson scaled the climbing wall in the kids’ gym. Emma Soukup, Shayla Evenson and Lexi Soukup shared laughs in the pool. Jennifer Boyle pulled off a back walkover on the balance beam, while Maddie Brown made a flower in arts and crafts.

Even the staff seems to have a good time.

“I love it,” said Willie Hagan, Luther College sophomore and staff member of Summer Daze the past two years. “Nothing gets better than working with kids at the Y.”

And if the noise gets a little out of hand? No problem.

“Clap-clap-clap, clap clap!” Longueville sounded with her hands Monday.

“Clap-clap-clap, clap clap, woo woo!” the kids replied.

“What does that mean?” Logueville asked.

“Quiet,” the kids responded.

Space is still available for the YMCA’s Summer Daze program. Cost is $115 per week for full days and $99 per week for half days, with discounts given for each additional child. For more information, call 433-1804, woo woo!
