The Austin Post 91 Legion team scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to come away with a 7-6 win over Kasson/Mantorville at Marcusen Park Tuesday.
Austin pinch hitter Preston Higbe was hit by the first pitch he saw from K/M reliever Cam Ruehman with the bases loaded in the seventh and two outs to knock in Mark Harber for the winning run.
“I was looking for anything and I just moved the leg a little to take it in the hammy,” said Higbe.
The seventh inning started with Brady Klingfus getting hit by a pitch and a double by Joel Swatfager. After Klingfus scored on a wild pitch and Adam Hemann walked, Harber knocked in a run with a single and Quinn Yocom reached on a K/M throwing error to score another run to make 6-6.
Adam McMasters reached on another K/M throwing error to load the bases for Higbe.
“This was a big win. Maybe it’ll be something that changes our mindset a little bit,” Austin head coach Bob Stratton said.
Austin (4-12 overall) started to pick up momentum in the sixth inning when pinch hitter Quinn Yocom came in and drilled a solo home run over the right field fence to cut K/M’s lead to 5-3.
“He just left it right across the plate and I thought I better swing,” Yocom said. “It didn’t seem like anything at the time, but (their starting pitcher) started to unravel a little bit after that.”
Post 91 starting pitcher Robert Wahlert hit a wall in the fourth inning, where he walked four batters and let two runs score on wild pitches. Swatfager came in to get a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the frame with K/M leading 3-0.
