Despite General Motors filing for bankruptcy protection Monday, Usem Inc., Austin’s Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, Cadillac and GMC dealer, won’t be affected, said Tom Sherman, Usem owner.

“We’ve been chosen as one of the hub cities and key players for GM going forward, so we’re fine,” he said.

In May, General Motors told about 1,100 of its dealers — one in five — that they would be dropped by late next year.

In April, GM said it would shutter 13 assembly plants for up to 11 weeks starting in May to control a growing supply of cars and trucks.
