Austin still cleaning up after tornado

The city engineer said Monday that there is a lot of work left to be done as Austin cleans up from tornado damage.
Jon Erichson told the City Council he expects the wood grinding site at Cretex Concrete Products North, Inc. (formerly Elk River Concrete Products) to be shut down Tuesday evening, but said tree removal sites could be created in other areas as necessary.
To date, Erichson said the Cretex site, located at 11908 14th Street N.E, has amassed 20,000 cubic yards of tree grindings.
“It’s beyond all of our early projections,” he said.
Kim Underwood, Austin parks and recreation director, said Todd Park also remains closed because of storm damage.
“It’s pretty barren out there,” she said.
The city’s cleanup should largely be covered by insurance, administrative services director Tom Dankert said. This includes trees within 100 feet of a structure — all those in that zone should total up to a stipend, Dankert said. He said he did not know how much the stipend would be worth.
Dankert said he has been in contact with the insurance agency, and both sides agree the city should continue cleanup and repair as exact dollar amounts are totaled.
One thing residents should notice within a few months is a regular traffic light near the A&W on Fourth Street. An accident the night of the storm took out a controller, but the city has ordered a new one for $20,000.
Erichson said it would arrive within 90 days.
