Austin’s wireless Internet is ready to go.
Austin Utilities announced Tuesday that the service, provided in conjunction with the Southern Minnesota Internet Group, passed final testing and is available for customers.
Utilities spokeswoman Kim Duncomb said 270 people have already signed up.
“It’s nice to not have to plug into everything,” she said of the wireless Internet.
The $1.2 million project has been in the works for about three years, Duncomb said, and was delayed about a year by equipment problems.
Duncomb said there might still be a few outlying areas that don’t get service, but said the system is nearly 100 percent operational.
Wireless packages on SMIG’s Web site are listed at $19.99 for 128Kbps speed, $24.99 for 1Mbps speed or $34.99 for 3Mbps speed.
