A husband and wife from Austin are facing multiple counts of aggravated forgery after a unique injury prompted a police search that uncovered a number of fraudulent documents.

Domingo Esaul Sotoabad, 39, and Esperanza Hernandez-Hernandez, 38, both appeared in court Thursday on the felony charges and are in Mower County custody.

Police were called July 1 by the Austin Medical Center, who stated that a man later identified as Sotoabad had a bullet removed from his buttocks, according to a court complaint.

A detective went to speak with Sotoabad about how he was shot. Through an AMC interpreter, Sotoabad first provided a false identification before admitting he was in the country illegally. He also said he had been shot in Los Angeles in 1991 when a stray bullet from a gang fight struck him.

Police also learned from Sotoabad that he had been working at Quality Pork Processors in Austin using the alias “Rodolfo Ramirez Jr.,” according to the complaint.

Two days later, on July 3, police went to his 810 Sixth Ave. NW home to do a vehicle search.

The vehicle they found was registered to a man with yet another name, but records showed Sotoabad in the photograph.

Police searched Sotoabad’s home on Tuesday.

He admitted that he had used “borrowed” birth certificates and Social Security cards to get a driver’s license and state ID.

He said he no longer had the birth certificates or the Social Security cards, but detectives did find a number of other fraudulent documents belonging to Sotoabad and Hernandez-Hernandez at the house.

Bail on each is set at $50,000, or $25,000 with conditions.

The two are scheduled for arraignment on July 23.
