A rural Austin man reported finding a possible homemade bomb in his mailbox Wednesday, according to a report.
Mower County sheriff’s deputies arrived at a home on 205th Street in Windom Township around 6:30 p.m., where a 46-year-old man had thrown the possible bomb from his mailbox into a nearby ditch.
The possible bomb was a 20-ounce Gatorade bottle, filled with a brown liquid and lighter-colored substance on top, and swollen to about 7 or 8 inches in diameter.
According to the report, one deputy said he believed the object was a “Draino bomb [sic],” which combines drain cleaner and aluminum, or a “chlorine bomb,” which uses chlorine, alcohol and sugar.
The report states that both bombs are often referred to as “mailbox bombs.”
Another deputy shot the bottle once to relieve pressure.
He then picked it up and felt a light burning sensation on his hand, which is what the 46-year-old man felt as well.
The man told authorities he suspected two people, one of whom had been harassing him recently, according to the report. However, he was unable to provide any proof that either person made or planted the object.
A deputy advised him to get a restraining order against the suspect who has been harassing him.
Authorities searched other mail boxes in the area but found nothing suspicious. Neighbors said they had not noticed anyone unusual nearby.
