EDITORIAL: Relay effort is a winner

It has happened again. The citizens of Austin and its surrounding communities have combined efforts to make a difference for a good cause.

This year, as in 2008, the Mower County Relay for Life surpassed its fundraising goal and has raised $98,797 so far for the American Cancer Society. The goal was $95,000, a lofty challenge under regular circumstances and an even larger undertaking in the midst of a weakened economy.

Last year, the local Relay for Life raised $76,000.

This event isn’t a small one, and in addition to fundraising, it honors men, women and children who have died from cancer or who have survived their fight.

It also takes a tremendous commitment from everyone involved, including the organizers, the teams who walk at all hours of the night and the community members who give unconditionally to this cause.

We congratulate everyone who participated in this year’s Relay for Life for their efforts, and we look forward to 2010.
