Hounds fall to Rochester; will play elimination game Friday

ROCHESTER — If the Austin Greyhounds want to make it to the state amateur baseball tournament, they’ll have to win an elimination game this Friday.

That’s because they fell to the Royals 11-5 at Mayo Field Sunday night.

The Royals (22-14 overall) seized momentum in the bottom of the fourth right after Austin’s Matt Cano had belted a two-run homer to left center field in the top of the fourth to tie it up at two apiece.

Rochester scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth as they came up with four hits in the inning.

The worst one came after Ronnie Olson knocked in two runs to make it 5-2 Royals with two outs. The next hitter, Josh Matti drilled a one-hop line drive that hit Hounds shortstop John Frein in the jaw. The hit scored two runs and put Rochester up 7-2. Frein left the game but was in good condition.

“They hit the ball better than we did and they pitched better. We had that one tough inning in the fourth,” Cano said.

John Kirby started on the hill for Austin (13-16 overall) and Jamie Boelter came on in relief in the fourth inning.

The Hounds will await the loser of the Blue Sox-Royals game, which will be played at Marcusen Park Wednesday at 7 p.m.

If the Hounds can beat the loser of that game on Friday at 7 p.m., they’ll be in the state tournament. They have good reason to confident as their ace Dave Meyer will start that contest.

“We’re comfortable with Dave pitching on Friday,” Cano said. “All three teams in the section are good, so two good teams will advance to state. I’m confident we’ll be one of those teams advancing.”
