A St. Paul man faces assault charges for allegedly attacking another man with a chair at a Brownsdale bar Monday.
Joseph Mark Schlief, 40, appeared in Mower County court Wednesday on one count of second degree assault with a dangerous weapon, a felony. He also faces two lesser charges.
According to a court complaint, Schlief was drinking with another man, 37, at the Keg Bar, 112 South Mill St., when he became angry and struck the man with a chair.
Schlief also allegedly struck the bar counter with the chair, causing about $650 in damage, according to the complaint.
The alleged victim, who had redness and swelling above his left ear, spoke with a Mower County sergeant and said the attack was unprovoked and he was only defending himself. A witness at the scene corroborated the story.
While speaking with the sergeant, the alleged victim complained of increased pain in his head and was taken by ambulance.
His condition was not immediately available Thursday.
Schlief is in custody on $10,000 bail and scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 27.
