Work could begin next month on new hotel

A proposed 61-bed hotel development in Austin took a small step forward at a Monday city council work session.
Construction on the hotel — which would go on land owned by Kermit Watts, owner of the Austin Auto Truck Plaza/Watts Cookin’, and behind nearby KAAL-TV— could begin as early as next month.
But first, the city is looking to draft a developer’s agreement to assure all necessary conditions are met before issuing the certificate of occupancy, according to a memo to the council.
The agreement would also help the developer meet a proposed schedule that has a lot of work starting quickly to beat the winter frost.
Council voted Monday to have a draft agreement ready for review at their next regular meeting on Sept. 8.
The proposed development would be a three-story building, with a canopied entrance and 73 parking spots in front. City documents do not specify what the name of the hotel would be.
Watts is in the process of selling two acres of his land to the developer to make this a reality.
Because of the pending paperwork, Watts and Austin Community Development Director Craig Hoium said the name of the developer is not being disclosed at this time.
Watts did say Friday he is looking forward to possibly having a hotel as a neighbor.
“I think it’ll be a great asset to this piece of property and the city of Austin,” he said.
