Abandoned piers standing in the Cedar River near Fourth Street Southeast will soon support a new pedestrian bridge. Austin City Council awarded a bid Aug. 3 to Landwehr Construction of St. Cloud for $295,390 to use the vacated Chicago Great Western Railroad corridor to construct a new bridge.
Work on the bridge is scheduled to start later this year and finish in 2010.
The project will cost a total of $375,890, but a majority of that will be paid for through a federal grant and a Hormel Foundation gift.
The city’s share will be $90,178, a figure roughly $13,000 less than projected in January, city engineer Jon Erichson noted in a memo to council.
