ADAMS — If aces were wild, the Rebels had a stacked hand Monday night.

The Southland volleyball team served 15 aces as a team as it cruised to a three-game sweep over Riceville, Iowa in Adams Monday night.

The Rebels (7-9 overall) trailed 2-0 to start the first match, but they rallied to take a 13-3 lead on a nine point serving run that saw senior Kelli Smith hit on three aces. They never trailed the rest of the night.

“I try to find the open spots (on my serves), but sometimes they just go farther than I want them to,” said Smith, who finished with five aces and six digs.

The Rebels went on to win by scores of 25-9, 25-14, 25-17.

The match was short on dramatics, but Southland took advantage of the lopsided scores by working on some different attacks.

“We try to run a lot of different plays so it’s kind of a more of a practice where we can try new stuff on the court and see what works and what doesn’t,” said senior setter Katie Barthel, who had three ace serves, five digs and four set assists.

Southland also mixed in some different players in the lineup throughout the night.

“Wins like this help us a lot because people who don’t get to play as much are out there and the ones who are usually on the court are on the bench cheering them on,” Barthel said. “It’s nice to mix it up.”

The Rebels will head to Wabasha/Kellogg Tuesday night for a conference matchup.

“This was nice warm-up for the W/K match,” Southland head coach Angie Smith said.

Emily Howton had nine set assists, six digs and two ace serves for the Rebels, Jana Schammel had three blocks, two kills and two digs, Jessica Pitzen had five digs and three kills and Jenna Juenger had five kills and two ace serves.
