According to numbers presented to city council Monday, Austin suffered $1.5 million in damage to public infrastructure during the June tornado — some of which the city hopes to get reimbursed by the state.

Specifically, Austin is requesting just over $1 million in funding through the state bonding bill to help recoup losses.

However, state officials may be hesitant to offer funding in an area where the city will have already spent money, engineer Jon Erichson said.

Erichson said a more likely route might be to go for a special appropriation, much like Hugo received for tornado damage last year.

In addition to the request for tornado-related funds, the city is also looking for assistance with flood mitigation.

The city has requested $1.875 million for the North Main Street flood mitigation project.

This would pay for half of three phases of the project — the other half is slated to come via the city’s local-option sales tax.

Overall, the project, which will protect property from Fourth Avenue Northeast to Interstate 90, is composed of 12 phases — the eighth phase is finished while four others are funded and scheduled for construction next year.
