Local burglary suspects arrested

Two people believed to be linked to at least three recent burglaries in Austin were arrested Wednesday with a little help from a citizen with sharp eyes.
A 22-year-old man sitting in his vehicle noticed the two going through a yard in the 700 block of Eighth Avenue Northwest at around 10:30 p.m.
When the man noticed the two suspects trying to open a door, he called police.
Police arrived and found that the garage had been rifled through but the suspects weren’t inside. They notified the homeowner, a 41-year-old man, that the two suspects might be inside his home.
A short time later, a 15-year-old male and a 20-year-old male were discovered hiding inside the house.
The juvenile wrestled with police while being led away, and the older man had to be “drive stunned” by a Taser before he was arrested.
Police found an MP3 player on the juvenile and were able to link it to a man living on the same block.
That man, 59, later told police that two of his garages had been broken into and a few of his cars had been rifled through.
After more investigation, police recovered a gun that had been reported stolen from a house on the 600 block of 11th Avenue Southwest over the weekend.
The weapon was found at the home of the girlfriend of one of the suspects.
Also recovered from a different location were a few items taken from a home on the 600 block of Eighth Avenue Southwest during the weekend.
Police believe the suspects arrested Wednesday are responsible for the incidents, and possibly for a few other burglaries in recent weeks.
And they may not have been arrested without a little help from someone who happened to be in the right place at the right time, police chief Paul Philipp said Thursday.
“Police work is about a partnership with the community,” he said. “I’ve always said that.”
