The Packers didn’t waste any time establishing their scoring ability in a 12-0 win over Stewartville in the first round of the Section 1A playoffs at Art Hass Stadium Tuesday.
Austin (11-5 overall) scored four times in the first 20 minutes and led 7-0 at the half. Martin Manocchio had a hat trick by halftime and Jacob Brehmer netted his third goal for his second career hat trick when he headed in a shot in the 70th minute.
“From here on out the guys know they’ve got to show up and play no matter who they’re against,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said. “I’m not saying we wanted to come out and just keep pounding them with goals, but we had to come out and score goals so they guys would continue to play the kind of soccer they’re used to.”
Second-seeded Austin, which will host No. 7 seeded Winona Cotter (10-6-2 overall) Thursday at 7 p.m., out-shot No. 15 Stewartville (0-15 overall) 54-0.
“It was big to set the tone and show everybody what we can do,” Austin senior Jordan Broers said. “We want to prepare other teams (we might play), so they think maybe we’ll do the same thing against them.”
Broers, a defender, scored the first goal of his career on a penalty kick in the 77th minute Tuesday.
“I didn’t really know what to feel. I wanted to cheer, but I also wanted to lay low,” he said. “I finally got it off my chest and I’m hoping to get one more before my senior year is over.”
Broers’ shot came after Pedro Herrera drew a penalty on his way towards the goal.
“Pedro was the one that got taken out and he could’ve taken the kick, but Pedro’s scored a bunch of goals,” Levisen said. “We figured it would be a good time to get Broers a chance and it was kind of a fun thing for him.”
The shot came minutes after Broers shot high on a breakaway attempt with just the keeper in front of him. It had been awhile since Broers had played offense.
“I hadn’t played forward in like four years,” he said. “I’m so used to playing defense and just laying back and clearing it. It’s a little different trying to score.”
Alex Klock and Ronaldo Rubio scored two goals for Austin, while Noe Garcia Marquez scored once.
Dante Ortiz had five assists, Brehmer had two assists, and Klock, Will Darling and Francisco Torres each had one assist.
Austin had plenty of reserves play for them Tuesday as a few regulars sat out with minor injuries to prepare for Thursday’s second round match against Cotter.
“We’ll be ready and we’ll bring the best Austin team that we can,” Levisen said.
