Police are looking for two men in a possible theft case after finding a number of electronics in an abandoned car Wednesday.
According to a police report, authorities found the car, which has temporary North Carolina license plates, near the El Patron restaurant on Eighth Street Northeast at around 6:45 p.m.
Inside the vehicle were two computers, valued at $900 each, as well as three DVD players, a wireless router and other miscellaneous movies and tools.
After the items were recovered, the car was towed.
Witnesses had earlier noticed two men inside the vehicle acting suspiciously by constantly reaching toward the floor of the car, the report states.
When a sheriff’s deputy pulled into the lot, the two fled the vehicle and entered the nearby restaurant.
The report identifies the men as roughly 20 years old each but further identification could not be made.
Witnesses waved down the sheriff’s deputy, who reported the incident to police.
Officers arrived and entered the restaurant. An employee said two men had briefly entered the building’s restroom before leaving.
Police chief Paul Philipp said Thursday that there is reason to believe that at least some of the items came from the Austin Wal-Mart.
He also said he’s not sure how the stuff was stolen, since electronic security tags remained on many of the recovered items. The chief also said that the case is still under investigation.
