No one was hurt during a Sunday farm fire in Rose Creek, but a farmer did lose his $10,000 corn dryer.
The machine belonged to Lawrence Gerlach, 47, of 56067 190th St. He noticed flames coming out of the dryer at around 2:40 p.m. and notified law enforcement.
Firefighters from Rose Creek and Austin responded. They were able to empty corn from the dryer and put out the blaze, but the corn and machine were both a total loss.
Sheriff Terese Amazi said incidents like Sunday’s are relatively common, happening about once or twice a year in the county during the fall months.
She added that the machine likely overheated given the warm conditions. Temperatures approached 70 degrees Sunday in Austin.
