A new police officer was sworn in Monday.
Michael Hartman of Roseville, Minn. joins the Austin Police Department. He replaces Amy Morgan, who left the department in September to go back to school.
“I am excited to be here,” Hartman said after being sworn in.
This is Hartman’s first law enforcement job. He studied criminal justice at the University of St. Thomas for four years, and police training for one summer at Alexandria Technical College.
Police Chief Paul Philipp talked with Hartman and his family Monday.
“It’s an exciting and a very rewarding career,” he told them.
“It’s about being called to serve.”
Mayor Tom Stiehm welcomed Hartman, who is from the suburbs of St. Paul, to the city.
“Austin is a really terrific place to live,” he said.
