A few members of the Austin swimming and diving team advanced to the finals of the Section 1A meet at Ellis Middle School Wednesday.

The section finals will be held at Ellis Friday at 7 p.m.

Junior Averi Splinter had a big night for the Packers as she broke the state cut time and took first in the 100-yard butterfly, an event she has advanced to state in the last two years. She also led the 200-yard medley relay team to a first place finish that was three seconds faster than the team from Mankato West. Brooke Johnson, Kelli Bednar, and Helen Heimark are the other swimmers on that team.

Johnson, a junior, swam below the state cut time with a second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, an event she went to state last in last year.

Austin diver Sela Fadness is fourth in the diving standings after the first day of competition. She is four points out of third and 22 points out of second.

Merideth Fritz will swim in the 200-yard individual medley finals and Helen Heimark will swim in the 500-yard freestyle finals.
