Smile — the Austin Public Library is set to get more security cameras.
City council on Monday approved $11,800 of city contingency funds to go toward the project, which will replace a recorder that was fried during a recent power outage and add four new security cameras to the building.
With the new cameras, the library will have a total of eight.
Director Ann Hokanson said the system has allowed staff to identify individuals causing trouble while deterring others.
Hokanson said theft and vandalism aren’t overly common, but both are disturbing when they do occur.
Last summer, for instance, an antique map detailing old street names in Austin was stolen from above a drinking fountain. No one has been caught in the case.
