Rude hopes to get police license back

On a day a commission began deliberation on his future as an Austin cop, Curt Rude said he intended to work for the department again soon.

The former captain said he is in the process of appealing his peace officer license revocation, which was effective Dec. 28. Rude said he expects to hear more from the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board at the end of the month.

A representative from the POST Board was not immediately available for comment.

On Thursday, Rude asked the Austin Police Civil Service Commission to consider the possibility he may get his license back before officially removing him as a city employee.

The commission held a hearing to discuss Rude’s future. By law, they have three days to make a decision.

Though Rude asked the commission to take more time so his appeal could play out, city attorney John Beckmann said Rude simply can’t be a cop.

By law, a felony conviction in Minnesota warrants an automatic loss of a police license.

Rude was convicted of felony drug possession by an Olmsted County jury in November.

If he was able to work for the Austin Police Department again, Rude said he could certainly help in the transition after chief Paul Phillip’s Jan. 31 retirement. In fact, Rude said he could envision himself as chief.

“I feel I have a lot left in my heart and soul,” Rude said to the commission. “Please consider my offer to continue serving in this department.”
