Art center to host second annual Starving Artist Sale

Watch Alex Heimer throw clay on the wheel, or meet and paint with Evgeny Rogozin this weekend.
The Austin Area Art Center holds its second annual Starving Artist Sale on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A variety of paintings, jewelry, prints, photographs, ceramics and digital art — all handcrafted by local artists — will be on display during the sale in the main hallway of Oak Park Mall, 1301 18th Ave. NW.
Some artists, like Heimer and Rogozin, will be creating pieces during the sale.
Rogozin, who is from Russia, is known for his community abstract work created on-site with the public during events. Saturday, Rogozin will display a canvas, offer supplies and a subject matter for the community to leave their mark — in paint — on a piece of abstract art.
Last year’s event featured only member vendors and was the highest grossing sale yet for the non-profit center, said member and sale coordinator Linda Draper.
“We decided to open it up to everyone this year. We’d hate to leave out anyone who is creative,” she said, noting that not all participating vendors are art center members.
Eighty percent of sales during the fair are paid to the corresponding artist, with the remainder benefiting the art center.
Artists set their own prices for their pieces, but the art center encourages them to keep most items under $50.
“That way the sale is really accessible to all,” Draper said.
The Austin Area Art Center is a non-profit organization that has provided a venue and network for area artists to show and sell their work for more than 50 years. They currently have more than 50 members.
